On August 2, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan despite strong opposition and solemn representations from China, seriously violating the One China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-U.S. joint communiqués, severely undermining the political foundation of Sino-U.S. relations, seriously infringing upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and seriously disrupting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, sending a serious wrong signal to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces. China firmly opposes and strongly condemns this, and has made solemn representations and strong protests to the U.S.
There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory. The government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China. This was made clear in UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 in 1971. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the One China principle. The One China principle is a common consensus of the international community and a basic norm of international relations.
In 1979, the U.S. clearly committed in the Sino-U.S. normalization communiqué that "the United States recognizes the government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China. Within this scope, the American people will maintain cultural, business, and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan." As part of the U.S. government, Congress should strictly adhere to the U.S. government's One China policy and not engage in any official exchanges with Taiwan. China has always opposed U.S. congressional members visiting Taiwan, and the U.S. executive branch has the responsibility to prevent this. Speaker Pelosi, as the current leader of the U.S. Congress, visiting Taiwan in any form or for any reason is a significant political provocation that escalates official exchanges between the U.S. and Taiwan, which China absolutely does not accept, and the Chinese people will not agree to.
The Taiwan issue is the most important, core, and sensitive issue in Sino-U.S. relations. Currently, the situation in the Taiwan Strait is facing a new round of tension and severe challenges, fundamentally caused by the Taiwan authorities and the U.S. continuously changing the status quo. The Taiwan authorities repeatedly "rely on the U.S. to seek independence," refuse to acknowledge the "1992 Consensus," engage in "de-Sinicization," and promote "gradual Taiwan independence." Meanwhile, the U.S. attempts to use Taiwan to contain China, continuously distorting and hollowing out the One China principle, and strengthening official exchanges between the U.S. and Taiwan to support and encourage "Taiwan independence" separatist activities. This is a very dangerous act of playing with fire, and those who play with fire will surely get burned.
The position of the Chinese government and the Chinese people on the Taiwan issue has been consistent. Firmly safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the steadfast will of over 1.4 billion Chinese people, and achieving complete reunification of the motherland is the common aspiration and sacred duty of all Chinese sons and daughters. Public opinion cannot be violated, and the trend cannot be reversed. No country, force, or individual should underestimate the strong determination, firm will, and great capability of the Chinese government and people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, achieve national reunification, and rejuvenate the nation. In response to the visit of the U.S. House Speaker to Taiwan, China will take all necessary measures to firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and all consequences arising from this must be borne by the U.S. and the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.
As two major countries, the correct way to get along can only be mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, avoidance of confrontation, and win-win cooperation. The Taiwan issue is purely China's internal affair, and no other country has the right to act as a judge on the Taiwan issue. China solemnly urges the U.S. to stop playing the "Taiwan card" and using Taiwan to contain China, to stop interfering in Taiwan affairs and China's internal affairs, to stop supporting and condoning "Taiwan independence" separatist forces in various forms, to stop saying one thing and doing another on the Taiwan issue, to stop distorting and hollowing out the One China principle, and to adhere to the One China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-U.S. joint communiqués with concrete actions, effectively implementing the U.S. leaders' commitment of "four noes and one no intention," and not to go further down the wrong and dangerous path.
